The Dos Pueblos softball team (22-3 overall, 10-1 in league) knew the stakes were high in today’s heated league rivalry game against the Buena Bulldogs.

If they lost, the best they could do in Channel League standings was tie for first. If they won, they would keep their hopes of taking the league title.

And senior pitcher Hannah Harris, who was named Athlete of the Week by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table this week, was not going to back down without a fight.

“I knew leading up to today’s game that if we played our game, we weren’t going to lose,” said a confident Harris.

The Fresno State-bound senior had one of her best performances of the seasons by pitching a perfect game going into the bottom of the seventh inning, until the Buena lead-off hitter singled into left-field.

“[The Bulldogs] were hitting me early in the count and hitting weak ground balls, making it easier for the defense to make outs,” said Harris. “But our defense did amazing today.”

After scoring in the first inning off of an error by the Bulldog short-stop, Harris and the Chargers earned the lone run that would eventually be just enough to upset Buena 1-0 on their Senior Day.

According to junior short-stop Chloe Madill, scoring early in the game was crucial to the team’s success.

Earlier this season, the Bulldogs handed the Chargers one of their three losses of the season. But after that loss, the Chargers went on an 11-game win streak that was eventually cut short in the championship game of the Thousand Oaks tournament by Camarillo when the Scorpions won 8-7.

But that loss did not hinder the Chargers’ spirits. But rather facing tougher competition between the first Buena game and today’s game helped the team regain their confidence.

“I think playing tougher competition between this game and our last Buena game contributed to the win because we knew how to deal with stressful situations and how to stay calm in those situations,” said Harris.

The Chargers face the Bulldogs again on Thursday, May 3 at 3:30 pm in their Senior Day game that will decide the Channel League champion.

Madill is looking forward to the match-up on Thursday and is ready to take down the Bulldogs for the second time this season. “We have all the confidence that we will end the week as Channel League champions.”
