All summer long, new Dos Pueblos Coach Nate Mendoza promised that his team would play tough defense.

Friday night Mendoza was true to that promise as the Chargers recorded a shutout of the Santa Ynez Pirates in a preseason game at Scott O’Leary Stadium. The final score, 12-0.

The Chargers senior safety Jordan DeGraffinreid hopes this win is a good indication of what’s in store this year.

“The win tonight really paved the path for this season,” Degraffinreid said.

And it was the defense that paved the path for the Chargers putting them on the board first by recording a safety in the first quarter to give the Chargers the early lead.

With one minute left in the first quarter junior quarterback Leshon Bell broke off a run to score the only touchdown of the game and give the Chargers a 9-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Chargers were able to hold off the Pirates for the rest of the half with strong defense, however, their offense was only able to generate a field goal by Nico Bornand in last ten seconds of the quarter.

However, the Chargers struggled to generate a consistent offense in the second half.

The defense emphasized by coach Mendoza carried the Chargers as the offense was unable to overcome blocking and holding penalties throughout the second half.

In spite of the stagnent offense in the last two quarters, the defense remained stout as the Chargers recorded a shut out to begin Mendoza’s season.

DP will take to the road next Friday as they travel to San Luis Obispo.
