The Dos Pueblos girls volleyball team couldn’t muster out the win against the Santa Barbara Dons on Senior Night on Tuesday at Sovine Gymnasium.
With a chance to tie for first place in Channel League on the line, the senior-heavy team lost 20-25, 26-28, 25-20, 25-18, 6-15.
In an heart-felt pre-game ceremony, Dos Pueblos honored 11 seniors as they were recognized for the hard work, dedication, and time they have put into the volleyball program throughout their high school careers.
The seniors honored were Marina Boulanger, Tala Hismeh, Emily Lunt, Grace Halleck, Megan and Maddie Leiphardt, Sam Rhine, Colleen O’Connor, Emma Craine, Melissa Scott, and Mia Cattaneo.
After the ceremony, the Chargers pulled ahead with an early lead of 9-5 in the first game, but fell short to Santa Barbara’s hard-hitting offense, losing the set 20-25.
But the Chargers did not lose their drive in the second game, overcoming a seven-point deficit and forcing the Dons to joust back and forth for the go-ahead win. The Chargers couldn’t rally enough though, and fell short to the Dons, 26-28.
Despite the two setbacks in the first games, the Chargers came out in the third game as a different team. Senior Sam Rhine had a spectacular showing and lit the spark that ignited the Chargers to defeat the Dons 25-20.
And Dos Pueblos was able to carry that fire over to the fourth game in a hopeful comeback victory.
The Chargers had a ten-point lead at 18-8 as the team worked as a well-oiled unit. And after a minor set back, middle Melissa Scott tipped the ball over the net for the final point to take the fourth game 25-18.
Tied at two games a piece, it was do-or-die for the Chargers, but Santa Barbara got the first point of the set and never looked back. Dos Pueblos couldn’t finish strong enough and fell to the Dons 6-15.
The loss puts the Chargers out of contention for the Channel League title. The team’s first CIF game will be determined by next week.
