On Saturday night, the Boys Cross Country team competed at the Woodbridge Invitational in Costa Mesa. The Cross Country Classic as it is formally named is the 3rd largest meet in the Country, and is renown for fast, night-time races. DP alumnus Bryan Fernandez won the Sweepstakes Championship race last year.
This time around, the Chargers top 7 won the Rated race, the second highest level of competition. Dos Pueblos barely edged Corona HS out first place with a score of 157-163, in a team time of 1:16:30. Senior captain Cole Smith was leading the race into the last 400 meters on the Estancia HS track, but ended up in 2nd place in 14:44 behind Jackson Marshall of Woodbridge. Fellow captains John Greening (15:13) and Andrew McGuan (15:16) finished 21st and 27th. Juniors Chris and Ian Wasjutin finished 53rd and 54th in 15:38. The twins were the 4th and 5th finishers for the Chargers and sealed the victory.
Dos Pueblos’ next 6 fastest runners competed in a separate Varsity race at the meet. They finished 13th overall with 293 points in 1:23:53 against other School’s A-teams. Seniors Phil Downey (16:33) and Lennie Nelson (16:37) led the charge in 46th and 52rd place.
The Chargers are now ranked 4th in CIF Southern Section, the same place they finished in the State last season.
The Girls cross country team opted to decline the meet in lieu of rest and recovery for injured varsity runners.
The team (minus the varsity) will race again this upcoming weekend at the UCSB Blue Lagoon Invitational. The Dos Pueblos Invitational at Shoreline Park is the following Friday.
