At the Clovis Invitational in Fresno on Saturday, the Boys Cross Country team finished 8th in the Championship 5000m race while the Girls placed 11th. The Clovis Invitational is held on the same course as the State Championships are in November. The girls were led by senior captain Addi Zerrenner who placed 12th in a triumphant return to form. After her, the Charger’s 2-4 runners finished as a pack in 67th, 70th, and 71st. Freshman Christina Rice crossed the finish line in 19:19 while Elaine McLure and her sister Natalie both finished in 19:21. Their 5th scorer was junior Tatianna Schluep (19:53) in 103rd place. Their team performance on the challenging course has bumped the Girls up into 10th place in the latest Southern Section rankings. Zerrenner has also moved into 10th place in the State Individual rankings.
After finishing 3rd in the Championship race last year, the Boys placed 8th this time in a deeper field. Senior captain Cole Smith (15:35) raced to 15th place against a national caliber field. Andrew McGuan (15:50) ran 5 seconds faster than last year’s race and cruised to 33rd place. Junior Ian Wasjutin (16:20) finished in 77th as Dos Pueblos’ 3rd runner. John Greening and Chris Wasjutin ended their races close with a time of 16:28 in 91st and 92nd place. Senior Tyler Bradford (16:48) was the Charger’s 6th finisher in 123rd place. Currently the Chargers are ranked 9th in the State and 6th in the Southern Section. Smith is ranked 10th as an individual in the state.
The Cross Country teams will travel to Ventura’s Arroyo Verde Park Thursday afternoon for the Second Channel League Cluster Meet. An outright victory for either varsity squad would automatically qualify them for CIF Southern Section Prelims.
