Following County and League Titles, the Cross Country team continued their successful post-season this weekend at Mt. SAC. The boys finished runner-up as a team to Saugus High School in Division 2 for the Southern Section. The last time DP finished this high in the championship was their runner-up performance in 1971. The boys exceeded expectations and rankings as they sat in 5th in the polls before the weekend. This redemption comes exactly one year after a dissapointing 5th place finish at Finals when the team had been undefeated in D2 and ranked 1st for most of the season. This time around senior Cole Smith led the boys in 6th place in 15:00 for the 3 mile course. His time was 11 seconds and 25 seconds faster than his performances at SS Prelims and the Mt. SAC invitational. He received All Southern Section Honors after the race. Finishing 25th and 28th for the Chargers were seniors John Greening and Andrew McGuan in 15:32 and 15:37. Clinching the 2nd place result for the team were Ian and Chris Wasjutin in 41st and 42nd place in 15:53.
In the Division 2 Girls race Dos Pueblos senior Addi Zerrenner moved up into 2nd place and recorded a personal best on the course. Her time of 16:53 was only 30 seconds behind race winner Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley. Baxter is undefeated in her career and the 2 time defending national champion, so Zerrenner’s performance is even more impressive. Although she will advance to the State Championships for the 3rd year in a row, the girls team will unfortunately not go with her. With 183 points the Charger girls finished in 8th position, 1 place out of advancing. The girl’s 2nd and 3rd runners were Natalie and Elaine McLure who finished in 43rd and 44th, both in 18:43. Freshman Christina Rice followed in 48th in 18:49. Rounding out the scoring group was junior Tatianna Schluep in 74th (19:26). Although they did not advance to State, the Girls team had their best year ever. Following County and League Championships, they advanced to CIF Southern Section Finals for the first time in over a decade.
Earlier in the month, both teams won the Santa Barbara County and Channel League Titles. Zerrenner and Smith snagged the individual honors at both races as well. DP’s All-Channel League competitors were Zerrenner (1st), N. McLure (3rd), and Rice (5th), and for the boys; Smith (1st), McGuan (2nd), and Greening (6th).
Following Thanksgiving, Zerrenner and the boys will travel to Fresno for the State Championships on the 30th. After finishing 4th last year, the boys are favored for a podium finish. Zerrenner finished 10th there as a sophomore and looks to return to form with a podium finish as well.
