The Dos Pueblos girls varsity water polo team won 21-4 Tuesday afternoon against Buena High School at home. Dos Pueblos dominated the game through the very end with a constant stream of goals.
DP junior Whitney Stiedl scored the opening goal in the first minute of the game.
“So far the team is doing great,” said DP coach Chris Parrish. “They have exceeded expectations. We have a very young team, a lot of the girls are freshmen and sophomores, but we do have some great strong senior leadership.”
Parrish felt that the team was very competitive this year. The team’s record is 8 and 1 and Parrish said that’s exactly where they want to be.
“Our defence was good but it can always be better,” said sophomore Petra Huebner.
Buena’s four goals didn’t seem to trouble the DP girls.
“We played really hard defence and just took advantage of our hard press, and that created a lot of opportunities,“ said assistant coach Roscio Fesembeck.
“The most exciting part of the game was letting everyone play since everyone has been sick lately so we haven’t got to play all together in a while,” Toni Shackelford said, a sophomore and one of the top scorers.
In the last two minutes Buena scored their last goal of the game. Buena fought hard but was overwhelmed by DP’s team.
“We’re feeling good, we want to be ready for the SM game tomorrow [Jan. 14],” said DP freshman Ryann Neushul, who contributed several goals.
It was a comfortable victory early in the season for the Chargers.
