As loud music reverberated across the gymnasium at Dos Pueblos High School, the girls’ varsity volleyball team tightened their laces, and began to warm up on Oct. 29.
“[I] feel really excited about this one because it’s our senior night,” said senior Danica Minnich.
This was not just a volleyball match, it was also the Senior Night, a night when the seniors on the DP volleyball team were honored with a lei and a portfolio.
“[Game one] we played all seniors, game two was mainly seniors, game three we let the underclassmen play, and then we closed it out with our senior class,” said coach Dillan Bennett.
DP senior Maddie Minier started off the game by scoring the first point against the Buena High School Bulldogs. DP continued to dominate throughout the game.
At the game point, it was Chargers with a score of 24, Buena with a score of 15. The final point was made by a strike from DP senior Karissa Mertens about 20 minutes into the game, ending the first match with a score of Chargers 25, and Bulldogs 15.
Buena took the lead early in the second match. But, the Chargers began to make a comeback, and the score continued to stay close.
Nearing the end of the match, it was Chargers 15, Bulldogs 20. After a long rally, the Chargers earned a point, then at 19 points, only four points behind the Bulldogs.
After a timeout was called when the score was Chargers 22, Buena 23, Chargers won another point from a long rally, and tied up the game. At gamepoint, Chargers took the lead, and the match ended with another win for DP.
When the third match began, Buena took an early lead again. This did not stop DP, and the Chargers began to increase their score.
At gamepoint for Buena, the Chargers rounded the corner with a score of 19, and then 20, and then 21, and then 22, as the scores became closer and closer.
The Chargers fell short of the win by three points.
In the fourth match, the Chargers were in the lead with a score of Chargers 13, Buena 12. Chargers continued to excel in this match, heightening their score.
Soon the Chargers increased to 17 points, leaving Buena at 14. With a great shot from DP, the Chargers won another point, with their score of 21, while Buena remained at 17.
As the game was coming to an end, the Chargers were up two points, Buena not having earned any more points. It was gamepoint for the Chargers, and the level of excitement in the gymnasium was uncontainable through the cheering from the sideline.
DP won 25 to 18 with the final serve from junior Danica Minnich.
“Tonight was definitely the most fun these girls have had, and one of the things, besides being competitive, we wanted to instill in them this year was to have fun,” said Bennett. “They love going out there, they love competing together, each and everyone of them.”
