The first half of the game was run by the Chargers as DP’s aggressive offense put them on the scoreboard first and their strong defense kept the Buena Bulldogs at bay.

Senior running back Anthony Spiritosanto, scored the Chargers’ first touchdown of the game with a 20-yard run within the first five minutes of play.

The Chargers also took control defensively. The Charger defense forced the Bulldogs to punt the ball three times in first quater alone.

And that dominance helped the Chargers start off the second quarter as fullback David Blevins scored the second touchdown and linebacker Nico Bornand scored the extra point to make the score 14-0.

Junior quarterback Leshon Bell continued to move the ball as he took a 17-yard run down the field to get the Chargers a first down, which helped the Chargers stay in control of the game. DP was then able to score a three-point field goal to finish off the first half with a score of 17-0.

As DP headed to the locker room for halftime, the nine homecoming princesses were escorted onto the field under the lights of the Scott O’Leary stadium. The halftime show ended with the crowning of Casey Dwire as the 2012 homecoming queen.

The halftime show gave the Bulldogs the momentum they needed to attempt a comeback in the second half.

The Chargers let two Bulldog touchdowns fall through the cracks in the fourth quarter. Bornand attempted a run at a touchdown which was called back by a holding flag. Despite the flag, DP was able to maintain possession of the ball and the very next play, Bell ran down a touchdown and Bornand finished off the score of 24 with the extra point.

However, the Bulldogs didn’t go down without a fight.

In the last 1:22 of the game, Buena scored their final touchdown and scored an onside kick to finish off the game with a final score of 24-19.

Despite the loss of momentum in the second half, Head Coach Nate Mendoza was proud of of the Chargers’ performance for their homecoming game.

“[Defense] played outstanding,” said Mendoza. “The last couple of minutes we gave stuff up but for the first three quarters and ten minutes we played a really good game.”

And Mendoza is already looking forward to the last league game against the Dons next Friday.

“[The Santa Barbara] game is going to be a great game, a rivalry game. They’re going to want to take the win from us but we’ll be ready.”

The Dos Pueblos Chargers, 3-0 in league, will take on the Santa Barbara Dons next Friday at home.

After the win tonight, the Chargers were able to leave the Scott O’leary stadium wearing the crown of victory of their homecoming game as they come that much closer to gaining the title as first in the league.
