Girls basketball starts off their winter season with an all-around new vibe

With a new head coach, Phil Sherman, the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team is ready to take on another season with a fresh start and a fresh team.

The Dos Pueblos girls varsity basketball team has their work set out for them this season.

And so does their coach.

The Chargers finished their last basketball season losing ten seniors out of 11 players on the team and their head coach. This year, the team faces new players and a new head coach, Phil Sherman.

However, Sherman is ready for it.

This winter season, as girls basketball begins to take off, Coach Sherman is ready to reshape the program.

Sherman is most excited about being back in the DP athletics program.

“[I'm happy to] be working with DP kids again” said Sherman.

For Sherman, adjusting to being the new coach in the program is one thing, but for the players it’s another.

“Because we have had so many coaching changes it takes a while for us to adapt to the new environment and learn to play under the new coaches methods,” says junior player Tabbie Magner. ” I think, however, it makes us closer as a team and Sherman has so much experience that we will be in good hands.”

With Sherman’s 30 years of experience there is no doubt that he will bring more to this team than people will expect.

Despite the preseason play  beginning today at the Lompoc Tournament, senior Serena Zepeda says that the team has “already learned so many new plays from him and have learned to work better as a team throughout [their] offense.”

This season won’t come easy though, with the lack of varsity experience, the young basketball team will have work together and challenge themselves to be able to compete with top notch schools such as Buena and Ventura.

“We have to work hard to compete at that level,” says Sherman. “I want us to develop consistency in our approach and focus.”

The lack of varsity experience will come with time, but this optimistic team is ready to step up and compete.

Junior Maddi Fleming says that “even though [they] do not have a lot of experience at the varsity level, [they] have great team chemistry and are willing to put the work in to have an amazing year.”

With all the first-time varsity players excited for what is to come, lone returner Helen Nam knows exactly what it is like to play high intensity basketball against some of the most competitive teams in the state.

“I am going to miss my old team for sure,” says Nam. “But this new team is filled with so much charisma and some of my best friends are on it, so what more could I ask for.”

Last year Nam was the one player that was always looking up to her older teammates for help and advice.

But this year she hopes that she can be as good as a role model to her younger teammates as her previous teamates were to her.

As the Girls Varsity team gets ready to head to Lompoc for their three day tournament to kick off their season, Coach Phil Sherman is expecting his fresh, young team to move forward and improve.

“I want them to get better quickly, learn lessons, and enjoy this moment in their lives” says Sherman.
