Tuesday night, the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team suffered an emotional loss against the Buena Bulldogs in their first league game of the season, final score 58-40.

However, the emotions weren’t running high solely due to the 18-point loss.

Head Coach Phil Sherman was ejected from the game early in the first half after a double technical foul. The technical left him unable to return to the gym.

Sherman could not be located to interview as he waited in the locker room for the team during the half and after the game.

With the tension running high, the Chargers buckled under the full-court pressure applied by the Buena Bulldogs and finished of the first half with a score of 35-19.

However, after a quick talk at halftime by Mike Gerken, who assumed coaching duties in Sherman’s absence, the Chargers returned to the court with the desire to finish the game strong.

Sophomore Brandy Jimenez led the the team offensively, driving to the basket and junior point-guard Tabbie Magner, played a strong offensive game as well. Magner continued to carry the momentum until she was pulled out due to a blow to the eye late in the second half.

Despite Dos Pueblos’ aggressive second half and ending the final quarter with 14 points, the Bulldogs dominated the court with a fast-paced offense and full court defense that left the Chargers unable to make up the missing ground.

Although the Chargers suffered a rocky start to their channel league play, Magner saw the technical as a way for the team to prove that they can come together in a moment of tension.

“I thought that the team really stepped up and didn’t let our lack of coaching affect the way we played,” said Magner. “It really showed how much of a team we really are.”
