Crosstown rivalries in high school sports is what it’s all about. The atmosphere in the gym. The relentless screams and boos from the opposing schools is what high school athletes and fans live for. Dos Pueblos Boy’s Basketball (4-9 on the season) is hosting San Marcos (11-4)  tonight at 7:00 pm. DP Coach Joe Zamora is no stranger to cross-town games and when asked why rival games (especially against SM) are so great Zamora responded, “Crosstown rival games are great because you play against other guys you have grown up with in other leagues or sometimes the same neighborhoods.”

Coach Zamora says that DP matches up with SM with “size and ability” and that the keys to winning the game is “to play good defense, cutdown on turnovers and convert on the offensive end.We also need to stop Bryce Ridenour (senior) and Elijah Johnson (senior).”

Zamora played for DP when he was a student here. He reminisces about the days when he played San Marcos, saying, “I remember beating San Marcos numerous times and the fact that my parents cheered for DP even though they went to San Marcos!”

Rivalry games are always the most fun to watch because of the intensity the players play with. Zamora says that, “Some players are sons of parents who went to DP or SM and the tradition has continued.”

Although DP has been struggling recently, they look to improve their record. This year’s team has a handful of young players. Guard Jayson WIlliams and forward Eli Wopat are both Sophomores and the youngest on the team, Anthony Trujillo, is only a Freshman.

Zamora says that the student body and the parents should expect “a very aggressive DP team that will come ready to compete.” But Zamora has some expectations of his own, adding, “I hope to see a louder more energetic crowd than what sm brings.” I do too Coach Zamora.

If you are attending the game, be sure to wear gold and show off that Charger pride!
