Hovertech’s students presented a prototype hoverboard in the New York trade show for their DP Virtual Enterprise company, in a competition which ran from April 13-15 in New York City. Their company received a gold plaque for their booth design, which commended them on their excellence of the product’s appearance, despite the incomplete functionality of the wooden prototype.

“Our students did a great job selling to other people,” said Scott Yamahata, the teacher of Virtual Enterprise.

Their company competed with over 300 others ranging in origin from Germany to China.

In preparation for the trade show, the student company had to examine their strategic plans.

“We would double check our business plan, triple check almost everything – business plan, marketing plan, our sales catalog, our hoverboard woodworking to get to the trade show,” said senior Jose Montalvo. “We had to make sure that the booth was ready to go, how we were going to plan the booth, our dress and everything.”

The Virtual Enterprise company experienced several complications while they were building their trade booth.

“For one, I’m very forgetful and very clumsy,” said junior Austin Ambrose. “One part of our trade show booth was our speaker system, and we just wanted to have music playing during the trade show to bring a nice little element to it. I forgot the speaker system after we got off the plane, so me and Mr. Yamahata had to go back to the airport and it took us about 4 hours before getting back the speakers.”

Ambrose was unsure whether or not their purchased items were going to arrive on the day of the trade show.

“We weren’t sure if we were actually going to have a banner,” said Ambrose. “A lot of the stuff on the trade show we bought in the last two days; the banner that ended up hanging over our booth was being shipped over while we were there. That was really stressful. We had a call and said it was at the airport and we got it.”

They’d finished building the trade booth the midnight before the competition.

Their Cart Mart, which sells snacks at lunch and nutrition, paid some of the shared cost of airline tickets and the booking of the hotel. Local franchises and companies such as Chili’s, Blenders and Chipotle aided Hovertech by hosting fundraisers that contributed to the trip to New York. The Santa Barbara Airport provided a discount to the airline cost and FedEx took care of the shipping to New York.

Students were grateful for the opportunity to expand and showcase their knowledge in the field of business.

“It was really fun – good experience to start a business in the near future,” said senior Sam Hahka.

congrats on having such an awesome booth design. It can be hard to have a booth display that really stands out of the hundreds of other businesses that try to make superb trade show exhibits.

Awesome trade show experience and it can be a stressful time getting everything ready and set up. It seems like everything worked out for your trade show exhibit.
